OK, you asked for this to be looked at as lyrics rather than as
poetry; as words that aren't complete on their own (without music),
and as words to be listened to rather than read.
The big problem I'd anticipate is that, hearing this sung as opposed
to reading it, few will get your "lion/lyin'" and "liar/lawyer"
wordplay; it could sound like you're just repeating the same lines
over and over.
That might be, depends on the delivery being right, nailing it, and being
concious of that requirement. One reason I really look forward to hearing
this (most of you can, Matt has this online, iirc) when I get the disc.
The only disc you need is one that puts you in a drunk tank, Duckery.
I have a similar situation to grapple with when I perform "Twilight Girl"
for folks who don't know the song/poem, with wait/weight and
Or, maybe, just maybe, your delusional state of self-grandeur causes you to
misunderstand your audience and not realize that they're confused, scared
and maybe a little pissed off at this drunken asshole swaggering around on
stage trying to perform what he thinks is his latest "masterpiece."

But I digress.

The Lion and the Liar
Got a disease
It's called "me"
and it's contagious so
Fuck off!
I've got a plan
to find a cure
If I can get off
The sofa.
(chorus)
The Lion, the Liar
The Lie in the liar
The Lie in the lawyer
Now there's a girl-
live in my hand-
and she has always
Beat on me.
I've got a plan
to cut her off
But then
I can't play the guitar.
(chorus)
The Lion, the Liar
The lie in the liar
The lie in the lawyer
I am addicted to being weird,
sold, sold out and the common turd.
Now that you know me, it's your turn.
The lion and the liar.
The lyin' in the liar.
The lion in the liar.
The lyin' in the lawyer.
The lion in the lawyer.
The lion in the liar.
The lyin' in the liar.
The lion and the liar.
The lyin' in the liar.

*actually, my true intentions weren't spelled
out enough.
i asked for the lyrics to be read along with
the act of listening to the song.
alone, they're obtuse, as you've pointed out.
again: i'm sorry for sticking this in your face.
and, if you don't "get it," then i didn't do my job.
slacker generation; nirvana style music; obnoxious
disposition in vocal delivery, etc.
A lot of good stuff came out of that era, actually, imo--- Nirvana
Unplugged
to me was pointing in the direction Cobain & cronies were headed
before
his
days were cut so short, a shimmering masterpiece. Beautiful playing
and
singing on there... and his writing cut right to the core often
enough.
Others either slightly before or after that I rank on a "latter day
classic
rock" level would be Pavement, The Replacements, and Phish... there
are
surely more but those come to mind immediately when going back to
those
suddenly long ago days.

yeah-
cobain's genius was subtle.
your description of "cutting right to the core" fits
very nicely.
nirvana, to me, seemed like a strange combination of
black sabbath, the beatles and kiss.
it turns out that cobain was an avid music lover who
listened to allot of folk punk like the Vaseline's
and the meat puppets.
early examples of nirvana?
really, they stand alone as far as genres go.
they really set a precedence in pop rock.
Hey, I finally broke down and bought one of these newfangled laptops,
so I'll be able to listen to this and other tracks!
I'll get with those when I awake again tomorrow (long night, so far)
and give some thoughts on them...
*that's cool-
